We had the techs at TP add a new switch into the loop, and it was either installed incorrectly or there's a configuration issue with it. It caused some packet loss to a few hosts and linode.com until we had them revert the changes.

Aaah the fun ..........

Probably something simple like forgetting to clear the ARP cache, 99% it's always the simple things ;)

OTOH, they managed the recent hurricane perfectly. It truly confuses me.

Edit: This issue may not have been caused by TP incompetence. It could've been bad hardware or something. Although ideally it would've taken them less than an hour to fix it...

Are you talking about Ike? I don't think Dallas was affected at all. I know the weather guys told us here in Austin we could get a tropical storm, but the thing went too far east and the only unusual weather was a slight breeze.

Yeah, Ike. I didn't remember the name (sorry, people who were affected!).

Dallas may not have been affected much, but two of TP's data centers are Houston. I don't know how bad the damage was there, but at the very least, one of the DCs lost utility power, and they ran both off of generators for several days to be safe. I didn't hear of any downtime at either.

That may not have taken lot of skill, but Linode's issues have made me enough of a pessimist that I would've expected at least one generator to catch fire and knock out a few racks.

Yeah, sorry about starting the off-topic slide. It's a habit.

I've always found The Planet to be exceptionally good with both service and uptime, and I'm surprised how often they've made mistakes with Linode's equipment.

Last week, I canceled a server that I had with them for 5 years (it was more than I needed), and one of the big reasons I chose Linode was because of their use of TP's datacenter in Dallas. I never had any major downtime to speak of (it was pretty rare), and they always answered tickets within 5-10 minutes. Manual reboots were handled even quicker.
