Hey all,

I'm wondering on the best way to do an upgrade / migration of my existing linode. I'm currently running an older Fedora release, and I'd like to move it to CentOS. In a sense, I'll be building a new server, but I'd like to have both up simultaneously, then just either change DNS or change IP addresses to complete the migration.

Can I run two servers inside the same linode at the same time, given that I purchase another IP address and have enough disk space?

Or can I get a new linode temporarily, paying for the week or so of overlap, then release the old one when I'm done with it?

Or is there another way I'm not thinking of?

And any other suggestions or websites on how to do a server migration like this would be appreciated!

You can not run two servers inside the same linode at the same time.

However, as you suggested, you can create a second linode temporarily. You can then slowly move things from the old server to the new server. When you are done, you would want to use the linode control panel to swap the IP from the old server to the new server and then cancel the old server to receive a pro-rated refund.

Just so you know, if you are changing data centers then you will not be able to just swap the IP between the linodes in the control panel. You'll have to change the DNS.

If you have diskspace left (or since you just got 33% more), you could also create a new partition and install CentOS on that partition. Then mount your old Fedora partition and move things over? I tend to install my OS on one partition and keep user data on a separate one for this kinda occasion.
