So just switched from Slicehost... digging linode so far. The only real thing I miss is the iPhone App. May seem like a trivial thing, but it's great to have if on the road a lot. Anyone working on one?

A Palm Pre app would be pretty slick, but I understand the SDK isn't exactly public yet.

I had looked into developing an Android application recently. Unfortunately, with the current state of the Linode API, this is not really possible. All the API supports is DNS. Unless you are changing your DNS every few minutes, an iPhone/Android/Pre application would be pretty worthless at this point.

If you want to ever have the possibility of a Slicehost type application for Linode, you need to bug Linode to make finishing their API a high priority. They have said they are working on it, but there are no timelines.

caker rebooted my Linode from his iPhone.

No joke.

In all seriousness, a lot of us in the office use iPhones, and the magic in the manager is already there. I'm unfamiliar with the Slicehost iPhone application...I cannot commit to anything, but what (out of curiosity) would you like to see in an iPhone application? What functionality would you need?

There's a thin line between "ready for customers" and "done", and we're straddling that line as we speak. We don't like to timeline our work because so much happens between A and B on that line.

Yes, you can use the Linode Manager from a phone, but it is not that great of an experience. I think most people are just looking to do basic tasks such as rebooting, checking CPU and network usage, etc. Loading up the full web page to do this can be slow and awkward.

A stripped down mobile site could be an improvement, but still is not the ideal solution. Nothing beats the speed and usability of a native app.

When speaking of Android, the possibilities go even further on what you can do. Since you can have background processes you can have it notify you to unusual CPU or network usage, or even widgets on the home screen with all of your stats.

Native phone apps aren't portable. A better mobile site would work for more people with much lower effort

I would love both. I don't have an iPhone yet, but if just a few more things get on that, I'm going to have to make the jump as soon as AT&T isn't the only real option.

But right now, I would love a light, quick, mobile version where I could do basic stuff. Reboot, change DNS records if needed for an emergency, etc.

My problem would be typing my password on my phone...

We're now performing an early beta test of the new Linode API. Join us in #linode-api on irc.oftc.net if you wish to participate.

I'm not that familiar with the iPhone, but I have to ask... is the iPhone really that challenged?

I just accessed the Linode Manager form my Nokia E90. Everything works, it's fast and even the Ajax console works. I can also ssh to the console or simply ssh directly to my machine. The graphs also work and display fine, exactly as if I was doing it from my desktop.

Linode's site design has always beenvery lightweight - I've been very happy using it directly as is. :-)

Apple fanboys in 3… 2… 1… - let the flame wars begin. Oh, sorry, this isn't slashdot.

While I haven't tried the Linode manager on my iPhone specifically, it generally works fine with all those AJAXy applications. Certainly a dedicated application would be nice, since it tends to be faster (and a better user experience).
