well, does Linode allow shoutcast?

Of course, I can't officially speak for Linode, but it's not forbidden by the TOS, other people use it with great success, and there's a monthly limit on the major resource that Shoutcast consumes (bandwidth). So, there's no reason for Linode to NOT allow it.

(Especially if you go over the bandwidth quota) -rt

I don't know what ports Shoutcast uses, but you may want to avoid getting a Linode at the Atlanta data center if they're on this list:

make sure your jumping thru the proper licensing hoops if you are planning to play commercial music or you will run into copyright trouble.

Keep in mind that streaming audio is a bit of a bandwidth hog.

Say you get the 540, which comes with 300GB of bandwidth. Assume you're streaming 64kbit audio.

300GB will support an average of 15 listeners, although there will probably be some overhead and other bandwidth use, so you'll actually do a bit less than 15.

On the other hand, linode bandwidth costs scale linearly, so if you have more listeners, you won't pay a fortune.

Consider, though, that while a Linode might be good for driving a shoutcast stream, it may be cheaper to use dedicated Shoutcast services to actually distribute it.

So, your various sources stream to the Linode, which handles re-encoding and backup DJing and sending to the ShoutCast streaming service of your choice.
