I switched all of my domains from GoDaddy to name.com a few months ago. Their main page is a big cluttered, but their control panel is nice and they don't try to upsell you crap every time you login. They include "Private Whois" for free, which makes them much cheaper than GoDaddy or most other registrars if you are interested in that.

I've used GoDaddy for years, they seem ok. I can be pretty sure they will be around the day after tomorrow. It was started by Bob Parsons. He started and ran a value priced software company making ok and useful products for very fair prices. He's a sharp guy.

it looks like name.com is getting rid of free private whois. http://blog.name.com/2010/04/private-whois-changes/

Can't believe all the recommendations for Godaddy.

Doesn't anyone read the news?

Or search on "Godaddy sucks"?

Or visit www.nodaddy.com?

Tons and tons of horror stories and bad business practices.

Also recommend GoDaddy. Their hosting is crap but as a registrar I would not use anyone else. Their UI is a mess but once you get to the domain management area it's easy to control everything for a domain.

Warning, they auto renew any domain you register at normal price. I turn that off on each domain. GoDaddy coupons can always be found on the net saving you $ when renewing. Makes a big difference if you are parked on many domains.

Godaddy sucks. 1 and 1 was the worst company I've ever dealt with. They actually made me *fax* a form to cancel their monthly billing. Then they told me they never received it and sent my bill to a collection agency within about a month.

I've been very happy with Dreamhost. Private domain registration for $10 / year. Never had a problem with them.

People recommend godaddy because they really are the cheapest. If you wait a little (periodic deals, but not very rare), you can get a new registration for $1. When renewals come around, you can always find coupons that will bring it down to ~$6-7 per year. No one else is cheaper.

I use dreamhost and 1and1... both renew and handle the setting of name servers fine. I use the linode nameservers.

Sorry. I read this in an earlier post in this topic.

Quote:
1and1 They refuse to support SPF

What is SPF and why would a registrar support it?

I use 1and1 for all of my domains currently but was thinking of transfering to name.com or NearlyFreeSpeech.net based on recommendations.

SPF is basically a way to try and reduce spam, it tries to verify the sending party is allowed to send mail for the domain.

Why a registrar would deny them..no clue, considering you only have one record per domain it's not going to clog up the system.

Got a domain at nearlyfreespeech. Neat interface, simple, looks pretty cool. Not as cool as Linode but still.
Domain registered, whois database showed correct info after 5 minutes :)
