I am trying to switch from a hosted site to Linode.

I have never used command line or configured a server.

Tried vpsBible, learned a few things.

Found this Stack and wonder if it is as easy as it seems.

Also, what is http://<your-linode-hostname>/install.php

What is the linode hostname? I see the ip address, a linode##### but do not understand what is considered the hostname, until the dns name server propagates.

Thank you.

You should be able to use the IP address in lieu of the hostname. So http://##.##.##.##/install.php should work where ##.##.##.## is the IP address.

linode##### is just an arbitrary identifier assigned to your linode. It doesn't have any connection to your IP address or hostname. You can rename it, but until you're running multiple linodes and need to keep them straight, it doesn't matter too much. It's also used when you're logging into Lish.

If you really need a hostname, Linode does have temporary hostnames setup for all their IP addresses -- I think it might show up in Linode Manager under Linodes -> linode##### -> Network if you haven't set up custom reverse DNS, yet. I can't check for sure because I've already changed mine, but I think that's where it was. It'll look something like li##-##.members.linode.com.
