I am in a bandwidth challenged part of the world, provincial Philippines. I would like to use DHL (or some such) to send 8 GB SD memory cards used in my camera to a linode.com office where they would be uploaded at high speed.

Something like Amazon/Import-EWxport. See aws.amazon.com/importexport/
But targeted at Memory Sticks

I suspect a lot of exciting photos from remote parts of the world would be obtained if this service was available. Perhaps some third party would like to try doing it. Maybe a DHL/linode.com joint effort?

Many of these pictures will also windup on Facebook or Flickr so I am seeking similar discussion on those fora.

Hmm... it's probably going to be pretty tough to beat AWS Import/Export, especially without larger storage capacities.

What might work out is finding folks within your community that need a service like this, then copy their photos/files onto a hard drive and ship that to AWS Import/Export. They've got a facility in Singapore, which should(?) cut down on the shipping time and cost a bit. The per-device cost is not trivial, so maximizing the amount of content per device is going to be important.

Amazon will take USB 2.0 devices, so one option is to get an SD card USB adapter and let Amazon load it.

Amazon also charges $80 per drive shipped plus $2.50 per hour for the time spent. For $40, you can email me the card and I'll upload your photos since that should take less than two hours give my internet connection.

Whoops, I meant mail me the card. That "e" shouldn't have been in there.

And the offer still stands. Mail me the card and $40 and I'll do what Amazon would do, but I'm doing it for half the price.
