Why not price backups based on the amount of data backed up, rather than the plan size? I may upgrade to a much larger linode for the extra RAM and CPU. But I won't need the extra disk space beyond the 20GB available in the smallest plan. Yet, suddenly I'm paying far more for backups with the larger linode plan (while backing up no more data than before upgrading). I appreciate the simplicity of the current pricing, but I think it would be a lot fairer to price it out based on actual usage, rather than potential usage.

Thank you for the suggestion, however the backup pricing is not going to change. We debated this during design and made the decision to use the flat rate.

Thanks,
-Chris

If I may weigh in, any rule should usually leave the possibility to change in the future.

What about something in between? Flat rates for vps, and flat rates for backups, and keep them disconnected. So you could have a 2048 linode with a 512 backup plan.

Just a thought, love the service regardless. :)
