Random Question: Who would like if Linode became a domain registrar?

There's already 9 bazillion out there, what benefit would it be to Linode to compete with them, what benefit to Linodes customers would it be for them to offer it?

Why is it so hard for people to realize that EVERY LITTLE THING ADDED to Linode's service menu adds complexity to their Business Model, and that means HIGHER PRICES.

Geesh people, let Linode be a VPS host, they're good at it. Stop trying to fuck up their business model with fluff that you can get from dozens of other vendors (who are already doing a fine job in their own business niche).

I think that the more Linode expands, the more I get to pay them instead of everyone else. I love Linode, and they could steal a whole market being a registrar. Many other VPS companies allow you to register domains with them, why not Linode?

This request has been brought up a number of times, with no official response (positive or negative). If you're looking for a registrar, this thread probably has the most extensive discussion on the subject.

Personally I really would prefer that Linode stay focused on what they do rather than branching out into all kinds of "related" areas, simply because the latter almost always means that overall quality suffers.

It would make them more of a one stop shop. It's really the only thing one needs that linode doesn't supply for a website.

Given money required to become a registrar, I'd rather Linode bought a rack or two of some nice discs and gave us a mountpoint.

I love that post and I love you for it. People seem to think everything is supposed to be like how most software is.

Thank God everythong is not software

I think Apple has provided a powerful counter-argument to the "stay focused on what you're good at" anti-vertical-integration crowd. A large part of the reason that Apple is able to provide a compelling user experience is that they control the entire chain from top to bottom. This allows them to simplify user experiences and make things "just work" more often than companies (or users) who are forced to try to integrate a lot of disparate solutions.

In the case of Linode, there's a bunch of added complexity involving keeping accounts up to date on the registrar side and the linode side, making sure the domain is set up right for Linode, etc. If Linode was also a registrar and my domain renewals and modifications could happen through a simple interface in the linode manager, it would make my life marginally easier.

That said, I don't know the costs involved, and this may not be a viable business move, but it does seem like a great opportunity for Linode to simplify the user experience.

Even if Linode offered registrar services, I do not think I would use them.

I wouldn't want to put *everything* (registrar + DNS + actual servers) all in one basket.
