I've been with Linode 512 for about a year to host my Postgresql 9 database, Mysql and Apache without a GUI. Now I'm thinking about moving my web testing(HTMLUnit) to Linode. Right now my Web testing application is developed with Java and uses Swing as the GUI. I would like to run about 50-70 threads on one machine. Would Linode 1024 enough be enough for the task with or without XServer installed? if not what which Linode service would be enough?

I would go with the new Linode HAL 9000 service. Sure it's expense, but it comes with the free Pod Bay Door module.

Best answer is "no clue". Spin up a 1024M Linode and see what happens. If it works - wahoo! did it in one - if it didn't - upgrade or spin up a bigger VPS and see what happens.

Stop when it works, or when you run over your budget.

Security thru obscurity is a myth - and really really annoying.

It's trivially easy (and extremely fast) to spin up a new linode, or to resize an existing linode. The general recommendation is to start small and then resize the linode if you need more RAM.

You may want to spin up a second linode for your test environment rather than using your production webserver, though.

How much RAM is currently used by your application?

All other things being equal, you'll need a Linode of approximately that size.
