I see on the Linode Library that the install guides for WordPress all say to download the file manually from WordPress.org - I know the install is also available using the standard apt-get command. Is there any reason to specifically use the download from WordPress, I would have thought that apt-get would make it easier to keep up with patches.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. I installed WP manually via FTP.

Some software doesn't work well as packages.
wordpress is one of those.

You can update wordpress via ssh from the wordpress web admin panel with the click of a button.
