I was wondering when/if/how often linodes are backed up?

The Linode hosts use RAID arrays to offer some protection against disk failure but backups are your responsibility. I use rsync to maintain a copy of my Linode at home.

I also use rsync.

I don't think in the history of Linode, anything has been completely lost on caker's end, but yes, even with the RAID, it's still your responsibility to do backups.
