Current install media is dated at some point in 2012, and there is a great distance between that and current state.

Untrue, there are multiple points of manual intervention required. While resolution is documented on archlinux.org, it makes installation for a newbie a little less enjoyable.

+1 for bumping!

Pacman -Syyu on a fresh install from the 2012.10 image won't do. They've done other changes to Arch Linux in between.

such as turning /bin /sbin and /usr/sbin into symlinks to /usr/bin :P

And this has been done. Current Arch is 2013.06 with kernel 3.9.3-x86_64-linode33.
