Any chance we can get a bump to the available Fedora distribution? It looks like F17 will go End of Life July 30th.

Thanks!

+1. F17 is now past EOL. I'd like to upgrade my servers as soon as I can, given that they're not releasing even security updates.

The availability of different versions of Fedora for new Linode deployments should not have any impact on your ability to upgrade your existing servers using Fedora's update mechanism...

I can't speak for Bill K., of course, but I've never trusted Fedora's automatic release upgrade system. It's botched upgrades on my personal machines before. I prefer building a new box from scratch, migrating my files, and running the two boxes in parallel for a "burn-in" period before switching the DNS to point to the new box's IPs. That gives me a chance to start test and fix problems before making the new box live.

Of course, I suppose I could clone the existing box and attempt Fedora's update mechanism there, but... I refer you to my first two sentences.

In that case, you may have better success deploying a fresh machine and updating it before installing any packages. I haven't used RedHat for something like a decade, but a fresh Ubuntu install at Linode has about as close to zero packages installed as you can get. Presuming that Fedora's default install is similar, updating a fresh Fedora install should be lower risk since there's barely anything to update.

Linode does need to keep up with distro releases, though, I'd agree. I suspect that Fedora gets low priority since very few customers (2.2%) use it. I'm not trying to give an excuse for them, just a possible explanation.

+1 for some redhat updates. CentOS and Fedora are both over a year old, and Fedora is past EOL. Just searching through these forums shows issues people are having trying to use Fedora's built in upgrade mechanism.

As Linode is a dedicated linux vps provider, it's surprising to see a lack of support for one of the two main distro branches. Updating a Fedora image once a year doesn't seem too unreasonable.

The CentOS image isn't an issue as it's 6.2 and all you need to do is run a yum update. Fedora can't (usually) be easily updated between versions. I just logged in to the Linode Manager though and I see that Fedora 19 is now available.

A Fedora 19 image was made available last week.
