Hi all,

Please allow me to ask a beginner question. I am sure it is very basic, but I have little experience and would like to clarify things before I take any action while the site is up and running.

I host my site with Linode. I purchased my domain name from Google Apps (which is from godaddy). Now I need an email hello@mydomain.com.

I set up the email in Google Apps, but I can only send out email, I can't receive any emails. I did some research and ended up on this page: https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/che ... nyjoke.com.

According to that, the problems are 1. No Google mail exchangers found. Relayhost configuration? and 2. There SHOULD be a valid SPF record (this seems less important). I am not sure what to do next. I wonder if anyone could give me a hint.

Any comments are very much appreciated.

Allen

Hiding your domain doesn't really help. But if the domain is onefunnyjoke.com as seen in the googleapps URL:
There's an MX record called "mail.onefunnyjoke.com" which goes to 106.187.89.22. If you want to receive mails you need to change the MX records to those of google. If you followed the Google troubleshooting link it would lead you here:
http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer. ... wer=174125

This displays the proper MX values you should have.

Hi Nuvini,

Thank you for your reply. I did read the post, but I don't seem to have the permission to update my MX record from GoDaddy. The interface looks different from a normal GoDaddy interface you would have if you purchase the domain without Google Apps, and has less features.

However, I found this post http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer. ... swer=33353, it says on the top that "If you purchased your domain from GoDaddy while signing up for Google Apps, do not use these instructions. Google will automatically configure the MX records for your domain."

That confuses me, cause it seems like I am still having MX record problem. Any idea?

That means that if you, while signing up for Google Apps, purchased a domain (which google then does through GoDaddy) it'll automatically configure it. It won't do this for existing domains.

You should have permissionsto change all DNS records, including MX. But I don't know how GoDaddy does things (I really dislike them personally). You should contact GoDaddy support or update the Godaddy nameservers to the Linode nameservers. Then you can update it directly at the Linode DNS. (Or move to another provider than godaddy).

Finally it works!

I actually contacted the support team twice before, never heard back. No need to say how I feel about the company.

I was still unable to update MX record from GoDaddy, because of the different interface, but I realized that I can update it through CouldFlare. I am not sure if it's a good idea to do it through a 3rd party service, but at least it works for now.

Thank you for your help!

CloudFlare is the one and only place that has DNS records for your domain:

Code:
onefunnyjoke.com.   172800   IN   NS   beth.ns.cloudflare.com.
onefunnyjoke.com.   172800   IN   NS   art.ns.cloudflare.com.
;; Received 173 bytes from 192.31.80.30#53(d.gtld-servers.net) in 34 ms

(This is normal.)

Attempting to change them at GoDaddy will, at best, do absolutely nothing useful.
