I've gone through the Email with Postfix, Dovecot, and MySQL tutorial at https://library.linode.com/email/postfix/postfix2.9.6-dovecot2.0.19-mysql#sph_dovecot for my Ubuntu 12.04LTS Linode. Everything during the install has gone smoothly but I've tried setting up a email account in Evolution to send a test email, and it fails to query the server for a list of supported authentication mechanisms.

The appropriate ports are open. Could someone give me some assistance with where to start?

I assume your DNS & MX records are set correctly?

Did you configure Evolution to use IMAP or POP? Can it receive mail?

Did you install a webmail UI? Can it send or receive email?
