My apologies if this is already covered elsewhere, but if it is my search fu is not up to the task of finding it.

I'm trying to setup a new instance with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Since I don't do this daily, I'm following the instructions for Ubuntu in https://library.linode.com/getting-started and everything is fine UNTIL!

I run apt-get update and seem to get everything until the end when I see the following warnings & errors (I presume W: and E: are warnings and errors):

Quote:
W: Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty_universe_source_Sources Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty_main_binary-amd64_Packages Hash Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

I take the last line at its word and think maybe all is well since everything else updated, and maybe this is just a difference with a linode customized distribution, so I run apt-get upgrade --show-upgraded:

Quote:
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Which is not too surprising, it's the 14.04 release, which is very new, probably nothing to update. I'm somewhat disconcerted by the lack of aptitude in the install, but I'll get used to that I guess.

My question is: Is all well? Were the warnings and errors above expected or is there a problem I need to resolve?

SDR

Have you tried a different mirror?

Same thing here on a fresh Linode with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS:

Code:
W: Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-security_main_binary-amd64_Packages  Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-security_universe_binary-amd64_Packages  Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-updates_main_binary-amd64_Packages  Hash Sum mismatch

W: Failed to fetch bzip2:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty-updates_universe_binary-amd64_Packages  Hash Sum mismatch

E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Using the default Linode mirrors (as configured in the default image):

Code:
#> cat /etc/apt/sources.list
deb http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-security main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-updates main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-backports main restricted universe multiverse

#deb http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-proposed main restricted universe multiverse
#deb-src http://mirrors.linode.com/ubuntu trusty-proposed main restricted universe multiverse

Also tried some cleanup without success:

Code:
#> apt-get clean
#> rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
#> apt-get clean
#> apt-get update

Have I tried another mirror? No, I just followed the directions in the linked getting-started page.

As for trying mirrors.linode.com: That seems to be the default based on the messages I quoted and a subsequent followup from cederberg.

Anyone else? This isn't critical, as I've just abandoned / shutdown the new node for the time being until I feel more comfortable that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is "working" correctly with Linode.

Note: In no way do I think this is a "Linode" problem, as in the hardware platform is still working wonderfully for me with my 12.04 LTS node. I just don't think the "base" distribution of 14.04 LTS has been quite tweaked enough yet. Given that I've been researching and can't find anything online about Aptitude being removed from 14.04 LTS, I'm also wondering if the absence of aptitude is indicative of more problems.

Was this Linode in the Dallas facility? I was also intermittently having the same "Hash Sum mismatch" issue with this mirror on Trusty and all of my puppet nodes were failing. Could have been networking issues somewhere in between vm and repo server... I ended up calling it a night as that was the last straw of the day...but maybe nine hours after that, it's been working fine ever since.

It was in fact in the Dallas datacenter. Good to know. I'll give it another shot sometime soon.

And for the record: whatever was "obviously" wrong with 14.04 (as in the warnings and errors) are no more. Configuring it tonight.

Just got it again. :(

Fetched 6188 kB in 0s (6439 kB/s)

Code:
Err http://mirrors.linode.com trusty/universe i386 Packages
Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net trusty/main Translation-en

W: Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/mirrors.linode.com_ubuntu_dists_trusty_universe_binary-i386_Packages  Hash Sum mismatch

I think this may be a Trusty issue since I haven't been experiencing anything like this with Precise and I've also been running in to a lot of other issues like exceptions in gpg when adding keys.

Removed? No, Ubuntu just doesn't install it by default. It's one "apt-get install aptitude" away (well, maybe "apt-get update" first) and you're back to normal package managing goodness.

Hi!

This is actually an upstream Ubuntu issue. They've done it previously, and essentially it happens when their upstream repo pushes out new Packages.gz (the list of package metadata) but not new hash lists. Last time, it appeared to be because they'd rolled back the hash list but not the Packages.gz.

I keep meaning to reach out to the mirror operators list to see if they can not do that, but haven't had a chance yet.

The only fix would be for us to manually roll back our mirrors' metadata to not have the mismatch, but that would require stopping future updates from being pulled automatically, so your packages would be frozen in time. Thus far, we've opted to track upstream exactly, even when they do strange things.

- Les

I am having the same problem on a newly configured Ubuntu 14.04 in Dallas.
Have just installed the PPA for Oracle Java, but the relevant packages are producing the Hash sum mismatch.

Any thoughts?

The same problem in London. I would say, it is a pretty urgent issue, since it prevents me from updating Bash for due to Shellshock problem.

Try running
Code:
rm -rf /var/lib/apt/lists/*
then
Code:
apt-get update
sometimes that helps
