Hi all,

Mail from my server to any recipient with a 1and1.com address (a commercial email provider) is being rejected. I tried a telnet connection to the 1and1.com SMTP server as follows:

alastair@li357-174:~$ telnet mx00.1and1.co.uk 25
Trying 212.227.15.41...
Connected to mx00.1and1.co.uk.
Escape character is '^]'.
554-kundenserver.de (mxeue005) Nemesis ESMTP Service not available
554-No SMTP service
554-Bad DNS PTR resource record.
554 For explanation visit http://postmaster.1and1.com/en/error-messages?ip=178.79.188.174&c=rdns
Connection closed by foreign host.

It looks like its complaining about my reverse DNS set-up. Does anyone have any idea if that's right, and if so, what might be wrong? Or any other suggestions?

Many thanks,
Alastair

It appears that they don't like reverse DNS entries of the form li###-###.members.linode.com. Try setting your reverse DNS to your server's fully-qualified domain name (something like blah.example.org) and see if that helps. It may take up to 24 hours for the change to be seen at 1and1's name servers.

Perfect - that fixed it - your help was very much appreciated.
Best regards, Alastair
