I'd really love to get an email notification for big events. Things like the RAM upgrade or any Linode-specific security issues.

I know you can do the RSS thing, but that requires checking it often, whether or not there is any new news. If somebody has theirs set up a better way, please let me know.

Go to the forum in question, scroll down to the bottom. There's a link called "Watch this forum" or something similar. Click on it, and that's it.

OK, I just did that for the announcements forum, but what I'm wondering if wheter that will email me just once for each new announcement or thread, or also once for every reply?. Anybody know offhand?

Edited to add:
Got my answer in the form of several emails - it does send an email for every new post anywhere in the forum, not just the original announcments. More emails than I really wanted, so I undid the watch.

I'd second the motion for an announcements mailing list, or perhaps an announcements-only forum where only Linode staff could post.

There was a group setup a long time ago for announcements/status, but I've never seen it actually used...

They're no longer used since I installed the "Watch Forum" mod.

Perhaps the answer is to stop non Linode staff from posting in the announcements forum.

The answer to what? General users will always be allowed to reply to posts in the announcements forum, that way we can receive feedback, etc. However, they can't create new threads.

If people want to be made aware of when things are announced, it's very simple. Click on the announcements forum, scroll down to the bottom, click "Watch this forum".

The answer to receiving email alerts of only the announcements themselves, not every reply as well.

For example, the recent announcement about the memory upgrade generated 30-some replies, mostly saying thanks. Unless I am mistaken (possible, and I turned the watch back on to check again), each of those replies would have generated a notification email, a bit much when the goal is only to be make aware of when things are announced.

My vote is to disallow non-administrator posts in the Announcements forum. Nothing that a non-administrator could post could possibly be a Linode announcement, so really anything posted by anyone who is not a Linode administrator posting an announcement, doesn't belong in that forum anyway.

Discussion about announcements by users can easily happen in any of the other forums.

Thanks Caker. That was exactly what I was looking for. I checked everything at the top of the page, but I didn't think to scroll to the bottom.

I just realized that you can manage all your RSS feeds in Thunderbird. Seems like that might be a good solution for me.

Right. It's worth mentioning that the forums has an RSS feed:
