inotify -- a faster kernel structure than dnotify, which it replaces -- is a low level file alteration monitor with support in gamin. This type of daemon is used in servers like lighttpd (http) and courier (mail) to avoid polling files and can therefore speed up Linodes by removing extra file system I/O. Would it be possible to get inotify built into the next Linode UML kernel?

How come no one has answered his question?

The question has been overtaken by events. inotify was included in the mainline kernel from release 2.6.13 and is now available in 2.6.15-linode16, the latest 2.6 release for Linode (the first Linode release post 2.6.13).

Thank you for your reply, do you have a date for when that happened?

Well, then my question still stands... how come that no one (from Linode) answered?

They seem to be great at replying quickly if they can say yes/no or give a set date for something, otherwise they seem to just ignore the question and/or wait until they have an answer... :/

Actually, I just sort of gave up on waiting. Also, when the kernel boots, inotify should show up in dmesg and /dev/inotify should be created; that hasn't happened yet.

2.6.15-linode16 was actually built in early January -- it just wasn't until last weekend that I announced it.

inotify is now system-call based -- no device node is created and no message shows up in dmesg.

Well, I can't speak for the Linode folks, but if it's important enough to require a response, opening a support ticket is recommended. That will guarantee a response, from my understanding (and past experience).

Well, if they're officially here in this forum I think they shouldn't just ignore some questions... but... you're right, if it's important then you should open up a support ticket (ignoring that that might result in the Linode staff getting lots of support questions about feature requests, instead of just one request in the forum)...

BUT... on the third of this month I did open a support ticket (regarding an upgrade), but I still haven't gotten any kind of response from them... So about nine days' passed without them even saying "you're X:th inline, we're hoping to be able to upgrade in Y days".

Edit: Just thought that I'd add that I don't really need the upgrade right now, I was just preparing for the future and, most importantly, I wanted to see what kind of response you get when asking for an upgrade; so that I will know for the future when/if I need more "power" on short notice...
