This kernel should help with the problem some Linodes have had when allocating more than 500M of RAM.

It should also eliminate the chance of hitting the free_irq() BUG that's been happening thet past few 2.6 kernels with the Anticipatory IO scheduler, since CFQ is now the default.

Like all newer 2.6 kernels, this kernel has support for NPTL, so moving /lib/tls is not necessary.

I resolved this issue by reverting to 2.6.18-linode24.

I use cron-apt to issue apt-get upgrades regularly on my Debian Sarge configuration. After moving to this kernel from the 2.4 series, apt-get would corrupt its caches (in /var/cache/apt/*.bin) on every few runs, causing it to segfault on the next invocation. This is not serious, but annoying, since you have to delete the caches manually to make apt-get work again.

There seems to be a thread about this problem here: http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel/473710/. I have now downgraded to 2.6.18-linode24 to see if this solves the problem. I am likely to post again here if it doesn't. :-)

Another problem with 2.6.19-linode26 : I can't boot with it (crash on LVM volume scan), problem solved by reverting to 2.6.18-linode24

Nothing I can usually do to Apache to share or unshare that memory makes any difference. Can this problem be solved? Thanks

Hmm... Can you check if you have a /lib/tls/ directory? If not, check for /lib/tls-disabled and if so, rename it to /lib/tls, restart apache, and check if that changes anything.

I moved /lib/tls to /lib/tls-disabled some time ago when it would not boot. Now I don't have either one.

Also, whatever happened when host39 restarted today made the situation much worse. Before the restart it didn't seem to matter much that Apache isn't sharing memory, but now it runs low on ram and starts hitting swap. If this can't be fixed I'm hoping going back down to 500M will restore sharing. Any other ideas to keep this running at 800M?

It's not a matter of having /lib/tls-disabled. If you have /lib/tls, TLS is enabled. If you don't, it's disabled. Moving it to tls-disabled is a convenient way to remove it in such a way as you can get it back easily.

This fixes 2.6.19's data corruption bug and has some security updates.
