It would be nice to have a linode.com-ann email mailing list for members that would contain the service outage and feature additon announcements that you currently post to the Linode.com Announcements forum. It wouldn't have to contain the full text of the announcements - just a link to them would be fine with me.

Just my 2 cents.

Message boards are great way for community chatter, but when it comes to actually getting messages, they're not so hot.

I think I can do this via the usergroups in phpBB. Check out the "linode-announce" usergroup.
