I just wanted to let you guys know that I mostly chose Linode due to their compatibility with my "leave me alone and let me do what i want" attitude.

I noticed requests for "make the install of a new Linode disable SSH and/or change default port" and things like it. This is inevitable I suppose, as you get more non-technical people signing up but I have this rather serious request:

PLEASE do not change what make you awesome! Offer as many of these features as you like as long as they are OPTIONAL. Backups are the same - a lot of people would want them and give them that option but don't enforce it. Always offer choice. Do this and I'll be paying you for the rest of my life :)

Thanks :)

I think those were suggestions for changes to be made to the images that are available to be installed. I don't think anyone was suggesting that it any changes you're allowed to make be limited. ie, protect a newb a little, while a vet won't have any problems doing what they want.

I second that, what makes Linode excellent is it's about as close to getting a raw piece of hardware as you can get.

But in the same breath I don't think (I hope at least) Linode has any designs on becoming a point and click, protect the user at all cost company. If they did they would just become one the many ordinary Hosting Companies out there.

They fill a badly needed spot and do it so very well. :D
