Is there a way to create an image from my slicehost slice and put it on linode? Or do I need to completely re-create my environment if I move?

Might be better to ask over in the Slicehost forums as someone who's actually using SL might have a better understanding of their setup.

On Linode, it looks relatively easy though :)

I did try searching and didn't find much about being able to d/l images from SL or anything about migrating from SL to The Linode.

Doesn't appear you can download your image or "slice":

This would be the way to do it. You can slurp your entire distribution's image over the network this way.

But remember that if you slurp from SliceHost here, you're going to end up with a 64bit userland, and probably need a 64 bit kernel, which may not be the optimum configuration for your needs.

Don't they have 32-bit now?

Interestingly, no. We're one of the couple of providers that offer the choice.

Hmm...
64-bit only -> increased memory usage even when not necessary -> people will need more RAM -> they will pay more?

Tnx for the good replies. I think i'll create an image from scratch as I don't need the overhead that x64 brings.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they aren't out to shaft you.

I didn't say anyone was paranoid, just that I was going to buy futures in tin foil.

you know, it's not really 'tin' foil any more - it's aluminum -- and there are plenty of scholarly documents available online exposing and revealing the dastardly reasons behind the government's conspiracy to force this change upon us,... and I would post a few url's but i need to disconnect before they start logging my keystrokes.

If you were on IRC, you'd know that I said "tin" because there is no way in hell that I'd be able to spell "aluminum".

Hell, caker convinced me to misspell "moron" for 3 weeks about a year ago.

:)
